Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden

Flowers, bridges, waterfalls - and so many ducks!

Visit in the Spring to see more than 2,500 azaleas, rhododendrons, and companion plants in wildly colorful bloom.

You'll find vibrant flowers all over Portland this time of year, but the variety and design of the garden is lovingly manifested. There are rock waterfalls, intricate wooden bridges, and the spring-fed Crystal Springs Lake weaves through the garden, reflecting the luminous hues into the sky.

Come for the flowers, stay for the birds! The garden boasts 90 species of visiting birds, including the Great Blue Heron, Townsend’s Warbler, Ruby-Crowned Kinglet, Chestnut-Back Chickadee, Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead, Wood Duck, Ruddy Duck, American Coot, and the Bald Eagle.

The Wood ducks were my favorite. (And of course the goslings!)

I can't think of a better place to bring a good book of poetry or a small watercolor set to enjoy the afternoon.

Admission is $5, which ain't bad for a day in such cultivated beauty.

Fun fact: The rocks used to build the waterfalls were brought from Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams!

Distance from Portland: 0-15 minutes, depending where you start
