Scappoose Bay

Explore the ever-changing waterways in the marsh or follow the mountain to Saint Helens. There's plenty to see as you paddle the Multnomah Channel alongside Sauvie Island.

Set your GPS to the Scappoose Bay Marine Park - there's often lots of traffic with boats coming in and out, but there's also a sweet kayak dock. (The kayak dock can also get busy with canoes, paddle boards, and kayaks, so be chill and patient - soon you'll have plenty of open water to yourself.)

The Next Adventure Paddling Center is located at the park, so if you don't have your own kayak this is one of the few places we have listed where you can rent watercraft. (Plus the staff is super nice - they gave us a waterproof map of the area!)

As soon as you slide into the water you'll get a clear view of Mount St. Helens to the North. There's tons of transient channels and groves to explore where you are and to the South, but if you have enough time, follow the mountain as your guiding star and you'll be on your way toward the tip of Sauvie Island, about 4 miles away.

We incorrectly thought we were almost there several times - but eventually we made it and our prize was a little beach we had all to ourselves. Just across the water you'll see the city of Saint Helens and Sand Island, where you can also explore, or turn around the tip of the island to check out Warrior Rock Lighthouse, the tiniest lighthouse in Oregon!

Distance from Portland: 45 minutes / 30 miles

Difficulty: Easy in channels, more challenging to and from Saint Helens
